Top 6 Myths Surrounding Turkish Rugs

With the recent rise of vintage, handmade goods, and 'thrifting', Turkish rugs are laughing! They've been here, waving their fringe in the air, waiting for their social debut and for someone to notice them. And there are so many myths about these pieces. Read on to learn the truth about Turkish rugs and why you've got it all wrong.

Myth 1: All Turkish Rugs Are the Same

Reality: Turkish rugs come in a wide variety of styles, each with its own unique characteristics and origins. And, every single Turkish rug is totally unique and one-of-a-kind. From Kilims, which are flat-woven, to Cicim rugs, known for being made from strips of cloth or woven 'embroidery' throughout, each type of Turkish rug offers something different. Regional variations contribute to the diversity in patterns, colors, and weaving techniques, making each rug distinct. Our personal favorite are the high pile rugs, which are shaggy, plush and super luxurious.

Myth 2: Turkish Rugs Are Too Expensive

Reality: While some Turkish rugs can be quite expensive, there are options available at various price points. The cost of a Turkish rug depends on factors such as the materials used, the complexity of the design, the size of the rug, the age, etc. It is possible to find authentic Turkish rugs that fit a range of budgets which is why we created High Pile Designs!

We never found it possible to buy authentic, Turkish rugs at a price point that was affordable. The rugs you see that are thousands of dollars are always beautiful, but what we’ve actually found through owning our business is that a lot of these sellers are pricing bleached rugs and cut rugs at these massive price points. And because the average person doesn’t know in depth knowledge about authentic rugs, they pay that price point for something that has already been devalued.

Myth 3: The More Colorful, the Better

Reality: The beauty of a Turkish rug isn't solely determined by its colorfulness. While vibrant colors can be exciting, and why we love Turkish rugs so much, the quality of the craftsmanship and the cultural significance of the patterns are equally important!

Interior Design in the U.S. favors more subdued hues so what many rug dealers will do is take their rugs and let them bathe in the sun to soften the tones. If a rug is extremely old, this also happens naturally which we call a ‘patina’.

Myth 4: Turkish Rugs Are Difficult to Maintain

Reality: Handmade rugs are art on your floors, but they’re durable! Proper care ensures that a Turkish rug remains beautiful and lasts for generations. Quick attention to spills/stains and periodic professional cleaning are enough to maintain the rug's condition. Avoiding direct sunlight if possible and rotating the rug occasionally can also help preserve its colors and even out wear. We have an entire guide on how to care for your rugs properly and an FAQ section answering top questions we get about caring for your rug.

Myth 5: Turkish Rugs Are Only for Traditional Decor

Reality: While Turkish rugs have a rich history and traditional aesthetic, they can complement a wide range of interior design styles, from modern to contemporary. Their intricate patterns and vibrant colors add warmth and character to modern spaces, making them versatile pieces for any home. We like to say, anchor your space with a rug and build your style based off that single piece! It may be one of the most important decisions you make when decorating for your home.

Myth 6: Turkish Rugs Are Just Decorative

Reality: So not true! Turkish rugs are decorative but also super practical. Their durability makes them perfect for high-traffic areas (kids and pet friendly too!) and they add warmth and dimension to any space. Additionally, Turkish rugs often hold cultural and historical significance, making them valuable heirlooms. The moment you purchase a Turkish rug, its value increases.

Understanding the realities behind these common myths can help you appreciate the true beauty and value of Turkish rugs! Whether you're considering purchasing one for the first time or already own several, knowing the facts allows you to make informed decisions and fully enjoy these pieces of art for the rest of your life. But if you ever change your mind, you know it was always a great investment.
